Character Analysis

The Narrator
The narrator seems to have many issues. He is writing the story from his prison cell because he murdered his wife. In the beginning of the story he talks about his love for animals but heartlessly kills his cat. He seems to have a transformation during the story from a good person to bad. He states all "good" had been driven from his personality by the time he murdered his wife. He seems to feel no guilt for his crimes and often blames his cats.

Narrator's Wife
The narrator's wife is the narrator's foil. She is sympathetic towards him and her pets and becomes even more sympathetic when he abuses her or the pets. This makes him seem like a complete villain. As the narrator transforms from an animal lover to an animal killer, his wife does the opposite and begins to love animals more and more.
